I’ve gotten a lot of questions lately about how I do my hair so I thought I’d take this opportunity to share with you all! I am, by no means, a beauty guru. A lot of my friends jokingly say they hate me because my hair requires no blowdrying and I rarely even brush it, let alone style it. Even when it comes to makeup, I essentially only apply black eyeliner and brown brow tint…that’s not to say I don’t purchase alllll sorts of pretty little things from Sephora on the regular (in fact, I have the VIB Rouge status *hands over my eyes*), but I generally don’t know what I’m doing with them. Thankfully I have several beauty expert friends who teach me. Stay tuned for a post on my beauty routine too!

As for my hair. Ever since I went down the blonde-Asian route a year and a half ago, I’ve been obsessed with the way it looks wavy. While my hair is naturally a little wavy anyways, the black shade really didn’t give the same level of depth that balayage does. And honestly, I think this applies to all girls with highlights/balayage. A little wave will really heighten the illusion of volume. Plus, it hides the real root of the dye and gives the impression of natural color. And when I say natural, of course I don’t mean natural for an Asian girl to have blonde hair, but rather that the coloring doesn’t look so forced.

If you have the time & appliances, I recommend separating your hair into 2-3 layers, starting with the bottom most layer and putting the rest up into a bun as you curl large chunks using either a curling wand or straightener (yes, you can make curls with a straightener too! * Full disclosure: I don’t know this girl at all, I just think her instructions are quite straight forward). The key to either tool is not to curl the bottom most 1-2 inches so that the look is more wavy rather than stiff curls.

If you don’t have the time or tools, I recommend spraying a little sea salt spray after a shower when your hair is damp and putting it up into a bun to dry. I like the Mai Tai Spritzer by Drybar ($25) just because of the way it smells. In all honesty, I haven’t tried too many variations so if you guys have recs I’d love to here them too!

Lastly, some people have asked about the volume in my hair. After some thought, I’ve decided I think the basis of the “volume” in my hair is due to the fact that I don’t really have a specific part (whether in the middle or on one side). I tend to flip my hair left and right throughout the day and as a result I think I’ve created a natural volume.

Hope this helps!
